Striking from the Boxing Guard
(Close-range striking with tight defense)
The boxing guard is a tight, protective stance with the fists close to the head and the upper body slightly tucked. Punches from this position are fast, compact, and hard to read – ideal for close-range attacks and counters.
Hands stay close to the head throughout
Punches are thrown with minimal motion
Upper body slightly rolled in, shoulders up
Fast transitions between guard and strikes
Great for short jabs, crosses, and elbows
Opening too much when punching
Dropping the guard after striking
Lack of body mechanics (shoulder, hip, stance)
Punches are too long or too slow
Practice short combinations from the guard: jab – cross – elbow – cover. Focus on compact movement, minimal telegraphing, and quick recovery to guard.
The boxing guard is excellent for infight scenarios or defensive phases. You can strike quickly, disrupt the opponent, or transition into trapping techniques – all while maintaining a strong defensive position.
