(MMA-style Close Guard for Infighting)
The high guard is a compact, tight defensive position where the palms are placed directly in front of or on the head – as commonly seen in MMA. It provides excellent protection from head strikes while allowing explosive, close-range attacks. Ideal for infighting and fast counter techniques.
Hands close to the head – palms often on the forehead or cheeks
Elbows tight to the body for added protection
Fast, powerful punches from minimal wind-up
Perfect for jabs, elbows, uppercuts, and short crosses
Seamless transition between defense, counters, and clinch
Guard held too low or too loose – head is exposed
Strikes are too wide – leaving openings
Lack of body mechanics – weak punches
Failing to return to guard after striking
Practice short combos like jab–cross–elbow or uppercut–cover from the high guard. Focus on tight, efficient movements and quick recovery to guard. Great for pad work and partner drills.
The high guard is especially effective in close-quarters combat, during clinch transitions, or when under pressure. It offers strong defense while enabling powerful, surprise counters – a crucial tool in any infight game plan.
