What is the SAMI EBC?
The SAMI EBC (Expandable Baton Concept) is a professional training system for the tactical use of the expandable baton. Is EBC training available for civilians?
EBC is primarily designed for professional operators (law enforcement, security, military). However, the techniques and principles can benefit experienced martial artists. Access to professional-level seminars may require proof of professional affiliation.
Does EBC training include legal training?
Yes. Legal awareness is a fundamental component. Every technique is taught within the context of use-of-force frameworks, proportional response, and documentation requirements. Regional legal differences are addressed.
What baton types does EBC cover?
EBC focuses on expandable (telescopic) batons – the most commonly issued duty baton worldwide. Principles also apply to fixed-length batons and similar impact tools used in professional security contexts.
What is the difference between EBC and SDS?
SDS is a civilian self-defense system using everyday objects and legal self-defense tools.
EBC is a professional system specifically for the expandable baton, designed for law enforcement and security use within duty-of-care frameworks. They complement each other but serve different contexts.
Can EBC be trained online?
Theoretical components and basic movement patterns can be studied online. However, operational baton training requires in-person instruction with proper safety equipment and qualified supervision. EBC training is primarily delivered through live seminars and agency-specific programs.
History and philosophy of EBC
SAMICS new series of courses offers the possibility for professional instructor training in use of the Expandable Baton (EBC). The program features a modular 3-module training system targeting operative forces, law enforcement agencies, security services, and interested civilians.
The program covers development of both defensive and offensive techniques. Each module is self-contained, with Module 1 serving as the mandatory foundation for advanced training. The approach prioritizes safe, proportional, and effective deployment — more control, less striking.

Can agencies certify their trainers through SAMI EBC?
Yes. SAMI offers agency-level certification programs that allow organizations to train and certify their own baton instructors under the SAMI EBC framework, ensuring consistent training standards across the organization.
What are the prerequisites for EBC training?
Participants must be at least 18 years old and have no criminal record. Optimal prerequisites include occupational experience in law enforcement or security, and/or multiple years in martial arts or combat sports. Module 1 is mandatory before progressing to any advanced module.
How effective is the EBC system in real operations?
